Women veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq got help from each other over the weekend at a “peer support workshop” sponsored by the national nonprofit group Vets4Vets.
Tucsonan Abel Moreno, an Army combat veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, said peer support helps returning combat veterans learn healthy ways to deal with combat-related stress.
He said vets need a safe place to share their war stories and their struggles “with individuals that have been through common experiences.”
The women veterans, who came from about a dozen states to the Redemptorist Renewal Center, 7101 W. Picture Rocks Road, also learned how to set up Vets4Vets peer support groups.
A Vets4Vets support group is operating in Tucson. For more information on the program and to take part in other events around the country, contact Jim Driscoll in Tucson at 319-5500 or www.Vets4Vets.us
The next workshop is in Indianapolis on April 25.
